Primary components of burglar alarms Part 3 – Sensors and other components

December 19, 2010 in Burglar alarms

Since every burglar never uses the same entryway or doesn’t always use a doorway to break into a home, it is critical that your burglar alarms have both door and window sensors integrated into the system.  If you have a multiple story home, make sure that the primary entryway doors and windows on the first floor all have sensors integrated into your alarms.  Most intruders will not try to enter the second floor of the dwelling unless the home is built on the side of a hill in which case the top floor is also vulnerable and sensors should be incorporated into your burglar alarms here as well.

A brief word about door and window sensors

The basic window sensor detects when the window is being opened whereas the more sophisticated ones let you know if the glass is being broken.  These glass break sensors are oftentimes technically referred to as “audio discriminators” because they detect when a burglar is entering your home based on the sound of breaking glass and then activate your alarms as a result.  These sensors are usually mounted higher up on the walls of the room or even the ceiling so that it is undetectable by the intruder.

Backup power supplies

Another key component with burglar alarms is a backup power supply source which keeps your system operating even if there is a lengthy power outage affecting your neighborhood.  Remember that even the best system is ineffectual and worthless if there is no backup power source in place.  The backup power source that you install should be compatible with your security system so you’ll want to ensure that before making your purchase it and have it integrated into your system.

Monitoring companies

Although this is not a primary component of burglar alarms, you can say that monitoring companies are an indirect component.  Just remember that you can’t always count on your alarm bell or siren to discourage a burglar when they are triggered.  Even the simplest of yard signs advertising that you have alarms protecting your home will discourage some intruders, but it won’t prevent all of them from attempting to enter your home.

Since you can’t always rely on your neighbors, having a professional monitoring company in place supports your security needs on a 24/7/365 basis.  Keep in mind that there are other components that you can integrate into your burglar alarms.  You can research what other components are available by conducting an internet search.
