Why does home security involve more than burglar alarms?

For many homeowners, their concept of the best home security goes no further than the installation of burglar alarms to protect their family and their possessions.  But will a burglar always be deterred when these alarms are in place? The answer is yes and no depending.  The less experienced intruder will most likely pass up your house if they have a remote hint that it could be protected by burglar alarms.  On the other hand, the skilled burglar may just laugh at what you have installed.

The reason for the latter is based on the fact that today’s intruders are not only more intelligent compared to those in the past, they are desperate because of economic times and can be pretty bold in their attempts to succeed.  Recent statistics revealed that the best burglar only needs about 60 seconds to break into a home and can easily steal thousands of dollars worth of property within 8 to 12 minutes.  It doesn’t matter whether there are burglar alarms installed or not where this individual is concerned.

What you want to realize is that there are additional home security steps that you can and should take even if you have burglar alarms protecting your family, home, and property.  So what other measures can you take in order to ensure more safety and security around the home and provide additional peace of mind? Remember the statistic above regarding 60 seconds to enter a home? In most instances, if it takes longer than this for the intruder to break into your home, there is a greater chance that they will move on and cease trying to break into your home.

One of the first steps to take is reinforcing your doors and windows.  Make sure that the primary entry doors from the outside have deadbolts in them.  Have window locks installed on all of the ground floor windows or any windows that open up into an underground room of the home (i.e. basement).  If you enter the home through your garage, make sure that you always have the garage door locked and secured before entering your home for the evening.

Finally, you might want to consider contacting a reputable company or technician that sells and installs burglar alarms in order to conduct a security needs assessment of your home in order to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses that may exist.  Remember first and foremost that it is always better to have a secure home and never need it than to have one that is not secure and be victimized.
