As was mentioned in a prior article, burglar alarms can be hard-wired or wireless.  These alarms can also be monitored or unmonitored anytime you are installing them in order to protect your family and home from a burglar.  There are basically only a few ways to monitor home burglar alarms so you need to determine which way will facilitate your specific needs.  The following 4 steps should help you.

Step #1:  Determine your home security needs – although this sounds fairly easy, it is the first step you should take in order to determine whether or not you want a monitored system as well as how your burglar alarms are monitored.

Step #2:  Decide on the type of burglar alarms to install – considerations include door and window sensors, motion detectors, surveillance cameras and monitors, and other detectors such as fire, flood, or glass break sensors.

Step #3:  Educate yourself on the monitoring options currently available – with either hard-wired or wireless systems you can pay a security company a monthly fee to monitor either one of them.  You can set your cell phone to alert you if your burglar alarms are triggered anytime the system is activated by an intruder.  Additionally, if you install surveillance cameras, you can monitor them on closed-circuit television or digitally depending on how sophisticated your system is.  The monitoring company can do this for you as well. Post image for How Do Intruders Disable Burglar Alarms?

Although burglar alarms are the best deterrent for keeping intruders from breaking into your home and protecting your family, today’s burglar is smarter than ever and can at times figure out what they need to do in order to disable your alarms.  This is evidenced by recent statistics about burglaries and the fact that one occurs every 12 seconds in the US.  The most cost-effective way to protect your family, home, and possessions is by installing one of the many burglar alarms currently available on the market.

Burglar alarms have become very sophisticated in recent years due to a number of innovations and technological advancements.  Many burglars are well aware of this and continue to figure out how to disable these systems which leads to more advancements and innovations in the process.  Surprisingly, today’s burglar has gotten very creative when it comes to disabling these alarms.

Door and window sensors typically operate using a magnetic connection.  When the magnetic connection is broken by opening a door or window that is protected, the alarm is triggered.  Many a burglar has figured out how to bypass door and window sensors so they do not trigger the alarms using a small strip of tin foil.  The foil strip is passed in between the magnetic connection and basically does the same job that the connection does.  As long as the foil contacts the magnet, the alarm will not be triggered. Post image for Dispelling the Myths about Wireless Burglar Alarms

As was discussed in a prior article, there are a lot of myths floating around out there about burglar alarms.  This is also the case with wireless alarms that people consider for keeping a burglar at bay while protecting family and home in the process.  The following are some of the more popular myths about wireless burglar alarms.

Wireless burglar alarms are too costly to mess with – FALSE.  The average price range is $100 to $300 for these systems.  Installation fees are also reasonable.

Installation is very difficult – FALSE.  Unlike hard-wired systems, wireless burglar alarms are geared to the DIY’er who has sufficient skills.

You’re wasting your money, no matter how much they cost – FALSE.  If you really want peace of mind and an extremely cost-effective way of protecting your family and home from a burglar, wireless alarms are just the ticket.

If the phone line is disconnected, the system won’t work – FALSE.  This will never happen provided you add a battery back-up to your system.  If there should be a power outage, you won’t have to worry about your system continuing to operate until your power source is restored.

False alarms are always triggered by pets – FALSE.  With the advancements in burglar alarm technology, many wireless systems today are equipped with “pet-friendly” sensors which can be adjusted based on the weight of the animal.  So you shouldn’t be encountering any false alarms while your system is protecting your family and property. Post image for Is It All Hype, Or Do People Really Need To Install Burglar Alarms?

The reality is that you either value the well-being and safety of your family while protecting your home and property, or you don’t.  Normally, you would want to be protected by one of the burglar alarms that are available on the market.  If you don’t want a burglar breaking into your home and stealing everything you have worked so hard for over your lifetime, then installing one of these alarms is a wise choice.  Burglar alarms can also be effective should an armed robber target your home.

Most people would agree that burglar alarms are more necessary now than ever before, but not everyone invests in them.  Let’s be realistic about things.  Without a home security system in place, you are just playing a waiting game and gambling against the odds of being victimized by a burglar.  Keep in mind that a burglary occurs once every 12 seconds (or 5 times per hour) in the US.  That should be enough to convince anyone that they should purchase and install one of these alarms.

Being burglarized is not only an unpleasant experience; it can be terrifying as well.  Your life is basically turned upside down when you are victimized.  Although there are certain things that can be replaced, lives cannot.  Despite the fact that most burglaries don’t turn violent, armed robberies and home invasions are becoming quite common.  So it makes sense to protect yourself by installing burglar alarms.  Then you have the emotional and mental consequences that result after the fact. Post image for Are Free Installations Of Burglar Alarms Fact Or Fiction?

Every day, you hear or read advertisements about getting free burglar alarms installed in order to improve the security of your family and home while protecting them from any burglar in the process.  You are usually promised alarms that are valued at nearly $1,000 and are nothing shy of state-of-the-art technology.  However, there is always the fine print that you need to read and be aware of any time you are considering the purchase of one of these advertised burglar alarms.

Typically, that fine print reveals that you won’t get a free installation and will have to pay a fee for it.  Plus, there is a good possibility that you are going to have to sign a lengthy monitoring contract wherein you will be paying a monthly fee for up to 3 years, depending on the company you are dealing with.  We usually cringe whenever we read one of those types of ads and even get a bit perturbed because in reality, it is nothing less than false advertising when you think about it.  But it doesn’t mean that these companies are doing anything wrong.  They’re just using some questionable ad tactics.

Another question you have to ask yourself about these burglar alarms is “will my family and home really be safe and secure with these systems?” Normally these systems come complete and will work once they are up and running.  However, the downside is that these systems only provide minimum coverage and protect only 2 or 3 doors or windows.  The normal home has more openings than that so how effective can alarms like this be when it comes to protecting against a burglar breaking in.  Just the fact that a home gets burglarized once every 12 seconds around the clock in the US.

On the other hand, if you live in an upstairs or upper level apartment and you only have a main door and a couple of windows, than burglar alarms like these are ideal.  Don’t be discouraged about these types of systems.  That is not our intention.  It’s just so that you are aware of what you are up against if you respond to these types of ads.  Even a small system that protects the most vulnerable doors or windows is better than no protection at all.  Unfortunately, most homeowners or renters want more security than that so these systems won’t be the ideal option.

Post image for The Importance of Burglar Alarms Certificates

Due to the fact that many individuals today have become concerned about the security of their surroundings, more burglar alarms than ever before are being installed by homeowners nationwide.  Current statistics show that a burglar breaks into a home every 12 seconds in the US during the daytime as well as the night time.  Granted the installation of these alarms has helped to deter numerous perpetrators, but criminals today are smarter than ever so burglar alarms have become quite sophisticated.

Choosing burglar alarms from an accredited company is important so the need for certificates to prove their accreditation has also become a significant factor.  Just remember that not all of these security systems are manufactured to the same standards, hence the importance of purchasing and installing one that is certified.  One of the primary reasons that you want to do this is because cheaper, non-accredited systems usually trigger false alarms.  However, there are a few other considerations.

Most properly accredited burglar alarms have the federal or state government’s backing meaning that they have had to pass certain security standards that non-certified have not.  Chances are, if your system is not accredited it has not been subjected to these government standards which means that you and your family as well as your property might be at risk should a burglar target your home.

There are four different accreditations that you should look for whenever considering the purchase and installation of any burglar alarms on the market.  If they are not accredited systems, keep searching until you find some that are.  This will not only save you time, it could save you a lot of money over the long haul.  These accreditations are:

  • NSI – The National Security Inspectorate
  • ICON – an approval scheme operated by the NSI
  • NACOSS – National Approval Council for Security Systems
  • SSAIB – Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board

Be aware that with these certificates for burglar alarms there will be registration fees charged.  Typically these fees average around $30 per certificate and all fees are non-refundable.  If you have a system installed in your home and your office, each one of them will need to be registered and their fees paid.  In most instances, these registrations need to be renewed every 24 months but some are annual.  Additionally, the failure to renew these registrations could result in being charged up to $100 for any false alarms that occur.
