Every day, you hear or read advertisements about getting free burglar alarms installed in order to improve the security of your family and home while protecting them from any burglar in the process.  You are usually promised alarms that are valued at nearly $1,000 and are nothing shy of state-of-the-art technology.  However, there is always the fine print that you need to read and be aware of any time you are considering the purchase of one of these advertised burglar alarms.

Typically, that fine print reveals that you won’t get a free installation and will have to pay a fee for it.  Plus, there is a good possibility that you are going to have to sign a lengthy monitoring contract wherein you will be paying a monthly fee for up to 3 years, depending on the company you are dealing with.  We usually cringe whenever we read one of those types of ads and even get a bit perturbed because in reality, it is nothing less than false advertising when you think about it.  But it doesn’t mean that these companies are doing anything wrong.  They’re just using some questionable ad tactics.

Another question you have to ask yourself about these burglar alarms is “will my family and home really be safe and secure with these systems?” Normally these systems come complete and will work once they are up and running.  However, the downside is that these systems only provide minimum coverage and protect only 2 or 3 doors or windows.  The normal home has more openings than that so how effective can alarms like this be when it comes to protecting against a burglar breaking in.  Just the fact that a home gets burglarized once every 12 seconds around the clock in the US.

On the other hand, if you live in an upstairs or upper level apartment and you only have a main door and a couple of windows, than burglar alarms like these are ideal.  Don’t be discouraged about these types of systems.  That is not our intention.  It’s just so that you are aware of what you are up against if you respond to these types of ads.  Even a small system that protects the most vulnerable doors or windows is better than no protection at all.  Unfortunately, most homeowners or renters want more security than that so these systems won’t be the ideal option.
