Most people today realize the benefit that having burglar alarms installed provides the homeowner with.  They protect you and your family, as well as your valuables from being victimized by a burglar, and knowing that these alarms are installed may be a sufficient enough deterrent to keeping an intruder at bay.  If you have already decided that you are going to purchase one of the burglar alarms that are currently available on the market today, you can start by taking some preliminary precautions first.

Here are 3 steps that you can take to start burglar-proofing your home ahead of purchasing and installing a system:

Look at your home from the backyard, front yard, and sides – you want to make sure that the exterior is well-lit on all sides as well as remove potential hiding places such as overgrown shrubs.  If you can spot potential weaknesses or security risks then you know that a burglar can too and will exploit these whenever possible.  Remember first and foremost that darkness is an intruder’s greatest friend whereas light is their enemy.  Naturally, alarms will help to protect you, but you shouldn’t over look these potential hot spots.

Think about using something that will slow down an intruder – another step to take before purchasing and installing your burglar alarms is to consider what would slow an intruder down or make it difficult for them to enter your home.  There are a number of simpler security devices that you can install or put in place that will accomplish this for you such as:

  • additional door locks
  • deadbolts
  • motion sensors and timers for interior and exterior lighting
  • window locks
  • wrought iron (decorative) over the entry doors and windows

If any of the above security precautions have been taken, it may serve as a good deterrent to a burglar, even before having your alarms installed.  Just don’t rely on these and continue as planned with purchasing that security system.

Noise is a burglar’s greatest enemy – as silly as this sounds, a barking dog, whether live or recorded may be all you need to deter an intruder from entering your home.  You can wire an activation system to trigger that recording to play should a door or window be opened when you are away by using motion detectors or sensors.  Naturally having the real thing would be a much better idea.
